Suzani is a traditional form of Central Asian embroidery. The word ‘suzan’ is derived from the Persian word for needle, and the term Suzani in this cultural context covers a range of handmade embroideries including bedspreads, wall hangings, tablecloths, and pillowcases. These items were traditionally made by women and included as part of their dowry for marriage.

The designs contain motifs that reflect this rite of passage, with symbols of fertility, fecundity, cosmology, and the tree of life amongst many others. A distinctive feature of the craftsmanship in the Bukhara region is the use of hook-work (also known as crochet) as a technique alongside the traditonal neeedlwork in our embroidery.

This technique increases the clarity of the images in the design, adding volume and sharpness to the motifs. It also improves the quality of the embroidery itself, making it more durable and hard-wearing. The silk threads on a silk fabric create a rich and lustrous finish to the embroidery that makes it not only stand out, but also long-lasting.
